(A Constituent Unit Of Lalit Narayan Mithila University, Darbhanga)
When we see the beginning of anything, usually it would have preceded at inception in someone’s aspirations, thoughts, or efforts. It is entirely true in the context of any institution. The story of the establishment of this college is also somewhat similar. In the memory of Pandit Ramnirikshan, an erudite teacher of the Bihar Vidyapeeth and a close friend of India’s first President, Bharat Ratna Dr. Rajendra Prasad, his able son Shri Girish Babu (Advocate), along with his other siblings and villagers including Shri Baleshwar Ram (then Minister) and Shri Amaresh Babu (Magistrate), with their advice, cooperation and support, established a co-educational institution in 1968 at their ancestral village Samartha in Dalsinghsarai Block under Samastipur Sub-Division of then Darbhanga District in the State of Bihar. The institution was named Ram Nirikshan Memorial College (Ram Nirikshan Smarak Mahavidyalaya).
Shortly thereafter, the founding members transferred the institution to Samastipur in 1969 with the aim of expanding it on a larger front. The college was initially conducted in the premises of Model High School, Bahadurpur, Samastipur, and later in some private and public premises for short durations before being established at its present location, which is a junction of rural and urban areas. The land for the present campus was donated by philanthropists and social workers. Later, after a generous donation by Shri Data Ram Mishra, the able son of Late Pandit Atma Ram Mishra, the institution was renamed Ram Nirikshan Atma Ram College, Samastipur. At the time of its establishment, the college was affiliated to B. R. Ambedkar University, Muzaffarpur. After the establishment of Lalit Narayan Mithila University in 1972, the college was affiliated to it, and in 1971 it became a constituent unit. The college is registered under clause 2(f) of the UGC Act.
Since its establishment, the college has been making continuous efforts to achieve one of its main aims, i.e., “to provide accessible and affordable education to all”, which benefits students by imparting knowledge, professional skills, moral values, and a global perspective. The college provides undergraduate education in Science and Arts streams. In regard to the academic calendar, curriculum, admissions, and examinations, the college strictly follows the instructions issued by the affiliating Lalit Narayan Mithila University, Darbhanga. Students have the option of choosing 16 Honours courses from Science (5 subjects) and Arts (11 subjects). There is also a Distance Education Centre of Nalanda Open University, Patna.
Following the directions issued by the University, the college is trying to facilitate mobility or change from one subject to another, so that students can pursue studies of their own interest and aptitude. Advanced learners are encouraged and complemented, while slow learners are motivated to gain a firmer grasp of their subjects, thereby motivating both groups to achieve better academic outcomes. For continuous learning, students’ class attendance is strictly and regularly monitored.
